Failure to recognize an approaching emergency vehicle can delay emergency response and create additional hazards on the roadway. A driver who does not hear a siren may remain in the emergency vehicle’s path, while an emergency driver may be required to maneuver around traffic unexpectedly. These circumstances can increase the potential for collisions and prevent emergency personnel from reaching an accident, medical emergency, fire, or other incident as quickly as possible.
EVAS combats these issues by adding an electronic detection layer between the external acoustic environment and the vehicle operator. The software monitors sound received by the vehicle’s sensors or other compatible audio hardware and evaluates detected decibel levels and siren characteristics. When the system determines that an emergency siren is present within its designated detection range, it generates an alert through one or more available interfaces.
In an integrated vehicle version, the alert can be delivered through the vehicle’s existing speaker system while a corresponding visual warning appears on the dashboard display. This dual-alert approach is intended to reduce the likelihood that a driver will overlook the notification, even when the driver is listening to music, operating the vehicle in a noisy environment, or otherwise unable to immediately distinguish an external siren.
For older vehicles without an onboard computer display, EVAS can utilize a smartphone-based implementation. The smartphone application can communicate through Bluetooth and incorporate live GPS navigation functionality to provide the driver with alerts without requiring modifications to the vehicle’s existing computer system. The system may also use rotating visual indicators, with one, two, or three lights representing the number of emergency vehicles detected.
